Border of Extinction – I

Project: Borders of Extinction

Authors: Thijs van Stigt

This is part 1 of a series of photographs that I started making along the edges of Natura 2000 sites. As opposed to the vast National Parks of the United States of America, the natural reserves of European mainland are much more scattered, sometimes not even the size of two soccer fields in the middle of a city. The photographs walk the lines of european nature conservation and fall either left or right of the divide, the viewer can never really tell. The resulting images are ambiguous, just as much as the place of ‘nature’ as both an ideal and a bureaucratic category in Europe.
